Oral Fluids Testing

Forensic Laboratories is pleased to offer a testing matrice for detecting drugs of abuse in Oral Fluids. This allows the use of saliva samples that are easy to collect while potentially eliminating the opportunity for adulteration or substitution.

Saliva contains trace amounts of the drugs and their metabolites in concentrations much lower than the detection limits found in urine specimens. However, special testing methods are in place at Forensic Laboratories with sensitivity and specificity to measure the lower cut-off levels in Oral Fluid specimens. Some advantages of Oral Fluid (Saliva) analysis for Drugs of Abuse might include:

Ease of collection:

The collection of oral fluid is a noninvasive means of collecting a suitable specimen for analysis for drugs of abuse. In a matter of minutes, the sample is produced with direct observation that is not gender dependent. The oral fluid collector can be easily labeled with the appropriate identification and the sample is secured in a container that can be labeled with the same strict chain of custody procedures applied with urinalysis.

Real time values:

The oral fluid sample provides a good indication of recent drug use. Most drugs are present in the saliva for 2-4 days after use. This correlates to the approximate times that the drugs are detected in the urine except for THC and PCP. Because THC and PCP are fat soluble, these drugs remain in the body longer and can be detected in the urine sometimes for weeks after usage. Thus, only recent use of THC and PCP can be detected in oral fluid samples.

Elimination of adulteration and substitution possibilities:

Since the oral fluid sample is collected under direct observation, it would be difficult for the sample to be substituted or altered.

The oral fluid collectors are available from Forensic Laboratories and can be ordered from the Client Services Department by calling 1-800-282-6574.

IMPORTANT! The sample cannot be processed without the information supplied on the test request form or chain of custody. If the test request form does not accompany the specimen, testing will be delayed. Please follow these guidelines when shipping your specimen(s) to the laboratory:

Six or more specimens:

Please use the UPS and FedEx Lab Pack. Fewer than five specimens: Please use the pre-paid U.S. mailer boxes. Oral fluids and urine may be sent in the same UPS and FedEx Lab pack when sending five or more specimens (e.g. three urine specimens and two oral specimens).

Please do not mix oral fluid and urine specimens in the same postage-paid mailer box! Per U.S. Postal Service regulations, use the box provided specifically for each type of test.
